Baked Mathri

Don't you like when there is some namkeen to accompany the tea, something to nibble while sipping tea. The saltish- peppery taste of the Mathri does not allow you to have just one. I always have a batch of Mathris stored to entertain friends that come over for tea or coffee.

I tried baking my favourite snack and this turned out very nice. These Mathris are made of whole wheat flour, so you don't need to worry about the eating processed flour.

Mathris are favourite tea time snacks for us Indians. Little namkeen finger food to titillate our tongues while sipping tea is a common sight. Its basically our saltines.

You can eat these Mathri guilt free because you don't need to fry. The recipe is as below:

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup of whole wheat flour.
  • 1/4 tbsp of baking soda
  • 1/4 tbsp of baking powder
  • 1 tbsp of salt (or as per your preference)
  • 2 tbsp of ground peppercorns (i have used the pepper powder directly)
  • 1 tbsp of chilli powder
  • 2 tbsp of carom seeds
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 sticks of butter at room temperature

Instructions:

  1. Pre heat the oven to 350F.
  2. Sift whole wheat flour, baking powder and baking soda together in a bowl.
  3. Add ground peppercorns or pepper powder into the mixture.
  4. Add salt, chilli powder and carom seeds.
  5. Add butter to the mixture and mix it together.
  6. The flour mixture should appear flaky
  7. Slowly add water and form a dough.
  8. The dough should be firm yet soft.
  9. Let the dough rest for 30 mins.
  10. Roll the dough into rounds.
  11. Cut the dough into desired shapes, I cut them into rounds, you can also make square shaped.
  12. Line the baking pans with foil and place the Mathris on top of it.
  13. Fork the Mathris with a fork to avoid getting puffy.
  14. Bake the Mathris for 20-25 mins.
  15. Check after first 15 mins for the color and appearance, turn upside down if desired.
  16. Once done, cool it on the rack and now they're all ready to be devoured.
